Late Saturday afternoon, with hurricane Irene approaching, D was feeling poorly again - chills and clammy. He'd been off antibiotics since last Sunday, and was feeling stronger last weekend, but was weak off and on all week. Saturday early afternoon, I tied down the furniture on his deck in the city, and we headed out to the suburbs where I live. I didn't want to get stuck in the city during the all-day storm because I had an appointment out here first thing this morning. The storm was due to arrive Saturday night and officials had asked everyone to stay off the roads. But D was developing a fever, so it was back into the city to the hospital, with visions of Katrina in our heads.
The ER was quiet, and got him in quickly. D had taken an antibiotic before even going in since last time it took him 12 hours to be treated, and he wasn't in as bad shape as last time. When it looked like they were going to keep him overnight, at around 8:30 or so, I decided I'd better head home. As it turned out, they gave him the choice to stay or go home about an hour later. I offered to go back in and get him, but he wanted to be home in his own bed and he took a cab. So we separately road out the storm, which wasn't as bad as feared, though many of the roads out of town were deeply puddled. It was stormy yesterday, but wound down by dinnertime, leaving leaves and small branches strewn around, nothing worse. D sounded awful in the morning, but by last night he was doing better. The docs have a plan in place to extend his treatment this time. Let's hope he doesn't have to go through this all over again.
Good lord, tell me these aren't diverticular flare ups that he is having. I'm always on guard for my own. I hope he feels better soon and I'm glad to hear that you are both safe.

First it was diverticulitis. The second time seemed to be colitis (on the right side) from left over bacteria that didn't get killed off. This time I think it was the same thing. He needs a much longer course of antibiotics it seems because while they appear to be working, they're not finishing the bugs off completely.

I'm so sorry. All this and storms too. I'm glad you're both safe and that the hospital was relatively quiet.

Sounds wretched, glad the storm wasn't as bad as it might have been. Tom was rushed into hospital 3 years ago with diverticulitis, it really was scary. Surgery fixed it and he's been so much better since.

It sounds like you both had an awful weekend. Thank goodness the ER tended to D quickly, and that there's a plan in place to heal him for good. And thank goodness, too, that Irene wasn't as bad as she could have been. All in all, everything could have been much worse.

RR: Thanks. Yes, we're lucky that all went relatively well given the circumstances.
Lucy: D wasn't able to have surgery the last time he was hospitalized because the inflammation was in an area they can't resection, I guess. But maybe once it's all healed they can think about it. Alas, he has dental surgery to think about next (sigh)...
Lorianne: Yeah, not too fun, but yes, it could have been a lot worse.
