[Lagoon at the Public Garden, Boston; 4/9/11]
We were surprised to see the lagoon at the Public Garden being filled on Saturday, and commented on how early it was this year. In fact, they filled it the same time last year when we were complaining about how late it was! Last year, Spring arrived early as it was already warm by mid-March and the magnolias were in bloom by Easter, which fell on the first weekend in April. We were impatient for the parks department to catch up. This year, Spring was slow to arrive after a tough winter, and it so happens that Easter isn't until the last weekend of April. This year, the parks department seemed to be ahead of the game. But no, regardless of the weather and the church calendar, they begin filling the lagoon in time for Patriot's Day weekend, otherwise known as Marathon weekend, one of the most sacred of all rites of Spring in Boston along with opening day at Fenway Park and the launching of the Swan Boats on the lagoon. Whether the weather will be as lovely as last year remains to be seen.
I hope you get some of the wonderful warmth we're experiencing in England. Already the red-top papers are predicting water rationing and desert conditions. It hasn't rained for a couple of weeks!

Thanks, RR. It's been warming up very slowly this year. The flowering trees are still well behind. But we're enjoying it. I hope you do get some rain so you don't have a drought this summer!
