[A driveway, Belmont MA; 4/5/08]
If only it were all so well laid out. But I'd be bored. I root for the moss as much as for the even temperament of stones. For perfect symmetry, and its anarchic spoiling. For the plotted course, and its surprise upending. But not utter catastrophe. Chaos corralled. Disarray rearranged. A balancing. A gerund, noun in action.
I once nearly bought a bronze wall sculpture, part tree and part nymph. I didn't have the money, though it was by a young artist and was at very good price. I still kick myself.
All successful works of art might be examples of chaos corralled, I'm thinking.

Probably so. Not sure the same can be said of driveways.

The thing I love about this photo, and might also love about the driveway itself, is that it does both. You have your little squares of perfect order, but each one is stone and unique in spite of all looking the same en masse. You have your moss and dirt together in uneven textures and thicknesses. And you have that big ol' broken place in the middle where it all goes to pieces.
Nice. :)
