Tomorrow is my last day of my first week on the job. I've been happy with it, and patient with the traffic. We've had a lot of rain, but this evening when I got home, after dinner, I managed to take a walk in the clearing air. It's hard sitting all day - car, office chair. I'll need to find a local gym and yoga classes. I could walk in the area but for the rain we've had (and now they're saying high humidity and 90+ degrees this weekend). There's a nice Mass. Audubon sanctuary not far from where I work, but I expect it's pretty infested with mosquitos.
Nestled in the green space between the turnpike and the exit there's a broad field. This morning I noticed it was spread out wild with cosmos, coltsfoot, chicory, and bull thistle. Or at least that's what I think. Honestly, sitting in traffic I took out my field guide and identified what I could from the distance of my car. I'm sure of the cosmos and pretty sure of the chicory.
I'm going to need to bring a tape recorder. Jotting notes while driving: probably not a good idea (nor is reading field guides, of course, but I was pretty well stationary at that point).
Tomorrow my parents will come back sometime in the evening after I get home. I'll have to make up my bed for them and sleep on the living room floor (the sofa bed is out, but I can pull out its mattress and put it on the floor for reasonable comfort). I'll drive them to return their rental car, then to the airport on Saturday afternoon, drive back and clean things up. Then I'll head over to a friend's birthday party. The hostess emailed me tonight asking me to help her with the party and I felt bad but I had to turn her down. I'm very tired.
Coltsfoot wouldn't be blooming now -- thta's an early spring flower. But I'm sure you're right about the cosmos and chicory. The latter is a very common roadside weed (and one of my favorite flowers); the former is often planted by highway departments, for some reason. Bull thistle is also coming into bloom in our area right now.

Hey, you'll be just like Tom Montag! (And who wouldn't want to be, really?)

I planted cosmos in my half-barrel in front of my condo one year, not realizing how tall it would get! My neighbor asks me every year if I'm "going to plant those weeds again." I love cosmos, but it goes better in a big field!
Gosh, to be like Tom Montag - there's an ambition!
