I wonder how many other soggy New Englanders are thinking about how we’ll possibly make it through the long winter stretching ahead when foul weather has begun so soon. Last year’s winter was frigid and long, the spring cold and rainy well into June. Though the summer was hot and mostly bright, and it stayed unseasonably warm into early October, when the weather turned bad it turned very bad, like a docile child who turns suddenly fractious at 13 and looks to stay that way through her entire teen years.
I just read Lorianne’s post today about the wash-out of our usually beautiful autumn and smiled at her passing mention of considering a trip to the tropics (note: avoid Cancún). Last night after driving through the rain to my yoga class, followed by nearly 90 minutes of invigorating/calming downward dogs and warrior poses, I lay in savasana (corpse pose). Instead of taking in the restful benefits of my practice as is the objective of the pose, I lay there plotting a trip back to Mexico in February or March, where I’d go, who I might go with, how I’d manage it. I was speaking Spanish to the hotel concierge when the meditation bells interrupted and our teacher began extolling the value of taking this “restful calm” with us into our week. Oops.
The sun shone in brightly when I opened the shades this morning, however, instantly lifting my mood and dispersing the doldrums like a vampire caught by the morning light. I saw plenty of blue beyond the windblown clouds every time I checked, which was often, and the forecast shows at least some sunshine on the menu every day this week. The cold is another matter as we’ll finally have our nightly frosts, but that’s to be expected this time of year. Cold I can take (I say now, ask me again in February), but lack of sunshine is enough to put me into savasana for the duration.
Hmmmm, last night I went to yoga, too...and the instructor & several students were discussing yoga retreats, including one in Mexico that's supposed to be fantastic.
I guess "escape" is in the air! :-)

Oh, I bet there are some great yoga retreats there. I remember reading about one. Very tempting. Although it's also possible to find yoga classes - they had them in San Miguel - if you're more inclined to do other things but still work in a bit of yoga. Ah, dreaming...
