[Cambodian couple fishing at Salter Grove in Warwick, RI; Sept.5, 2005]
On Monday, Labor Day, my friend CA and I went to Salter Grove, not far from her house. Local artist Holly Ewald and folklorist Michael Bell were working there on a collaborative project to record stories by the people who use the park and to have them capture photos, all of which they'll use for an installation at the Warwick Museum of Art. (See a previous collaborative project Holly did with Rhode Island Cambodians. And see Michael's book, Food for the Dead, and an interesting interview.) CA recorded her own story about the park, but since I'd never been there I stuck to photographing. I emailed the one above to Holly, along with a couple of others, which I'll post below.
The salt marsh and tidal flats provide habitat for ribbed mussels and fiddler crabs, which is probably what the couple above are fishing for with nets. We also saw several people fishing with poles off of the breakwater into Narragansett Bay. The park is owned by the state of Rhode Island.

That photo is so peaceful and calm.
